What Does 'Follow the Child' Mean? (Webinar 3 of 3)
Series Title: What Does 'Follow the Child' Mean?

Date: April 17, 2018
Time: 4:00-6:00 Mountain / 3:00-5:00 Pacific

Presented By: David Brown

This series will describe the process of using a child centered approach to assessment and how critical the interaction of a child's senses impacts their overall functioning and behavior.

Session 1: Availability for Learning: The Forgotten Senses
The first session will address how the senses are designed to develop and work simultaneously with one another. A problem with one sense will impact the functioning of another. Two often ignored senses, the proprioceptive sense and the vestibular sense are critical to a child’s overall functioning. The webinar will use a multi-sensory perspective to help participants understand how to interpret a child’s behavior to help them plan instruction and programming.

Session 2: Looking at the World through Rose-Colored Glasses: Approaches to Positive Assessment
This session will examine and discuss the perspectives and assumptions that educators, medical professionals, and other related service providers often employ when viewing a child with severe disabilities including deaf-blindness. A more effective, child-centered approach to assessment (e.g., identifying strengths, abilities, interests) will be proposed, which emphasizes capacity building rather than a deficit-framing perspective.

Session 3: Self-Regulation and Self-Stimulation: The Emotional Heart of the Child
The final session of the series will describe the importance of observing a child’s existing spontaneous behaviors. A consideration of the functions of all the child’s senses can help teachers and parents understand what behaviors reveal about a child’s difficulties and needs. The sensory, cognitive, and physiological aspects of self-regulation will be discussed and consideration will be given to the crucial importance of self-stimulation behaviors as self-regulation behaviors.
